Austin, Texas, April 5, 2017 – The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum was filled with family, friends, generous donors and exceptional youth at the Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo’s 2017 Youth Auction, Friday, March 25th. Each year, top winners of the Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo’s Competitive Events Program are showcased during the special event honoring participants and their accomplishments. Grand Champion animals as well as artwork were on display during the event.

Held on the last Friday of the annual Fair & Rodeo, the Youth Auction celebrates the hard work of Texas youth and is the epitome of Promoting Youth Education – Preserving Western Heritage. Philanthropic individuals and corporations attend the event to invest in Texas youth. The day’s events culminated as the Grand Champion Steer Auction ensued. As the bidding started, old friends Mike McCarty, buyer of last year’s Grand Champion Steer, and Doug Maund, of Maund Auto Group, battled it out for the highest bid. The two attended high school in Austin together and both are committed to supporting the future of today’s youth. Maund won the final bid at $60,000, an increase over last year’s winning bid of $57,000.

When asked why he chose to bid on the Grand Champion Steer specifically, Maund explains, “This was an opportunity to make an impact on the future of Texas youth. It represents a higher education for a deserving student.” Doug Maund is Chairman of the Board for Maund Auto Group, which has served the Austin community since 1957.

This year’s Youth Auction awarded an estimated $772,000 to Texas students. Grand Champion Steer exhibitor, Cuatro Schauer, remarked he would use his winnings to purchase an animal for next year’s competition and put the rest towards an education at Texas A&M University. The Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo is proud to support the efforts of Texas students and commends all competitors from this year’s Fair & Rodeo for their dedication and hard work.
